Blotting, both Western and Sweat (Weeks 7-8)

Usual lab attire for Dr. Li’s lab during EtBr staining – something I wasn’t expecting at all.

The past two weeks have been pretty busy both in and out of lab. Celebrating both Kat and Ayri’s birthdays, we traveled to Kenting and Taipei for some weekend relaxation. Though, lab has been really sobering in understanding the nature of science. There’s been many ups and downs in lab; we haven’t been able to produce the data we anticipated when we began. Though, Kelly has taught us a lot about how things operate in Dr Li’s lab and labs at KMU in general. It’s been a little frustrating learning how things work versus how I learned things back at Cal Poly, but keeping an open mind has been really important.

We got soaked in Kenting, the rain was unexpected!

These two weeks have been mostly troubleshooting different parts of the project – which happens often when there’s many different lab members. We are producing data, but it’s not good data – we’ve been figuring out previous members’ mistakes and trying to piece the project back together in a correct manner. I also can’t help but think about the last two weeks here in Taiwan. It’s been a very fast paced summer and I’m really sad that it’s coming to an end. The next week and some change is going to be lab heavy – focusing on how to finish up whatever we can and produce some amount of data that is beneficial to the lab. – Brendon
